About the Guide

This started the way most good ideas in Perth start — someone posted on r/perth asking where to get a decent Guinness. Turns out a lot of us had opinions. Strong ones.

So we decided to actually do something about it. We visit pubs across Perth, order a Guinness, and rate it properly. No free drinks, no sponsorships, no mates-rates — just honest scores from people who care about a proper pint.

How We Score

Every venue gets rated out of 10 across five criteria:

  • Appearance — Is it jet black? Does the head look right? Does it look like a Guinness should?
  • Flavour — That rich, roasty, dry character. Does it taste the way it should?
  • Texture/Creaminess — Smooth and velvety, or thin and fizzy? Creaminess is king.
  • Head — Thick, creamy, domed head that lasts? Or flat and gone in 30 seconds?
  • Pour — Did we see the pour? Was it a proper two-part with a patient settle?

The overall score is a weighted average of the five criteria, with Flavour and Texture/Creaminess carrying slightly more weight — because at the end of the day, how it tastes and feels matters more than how it looks. We try to visit each venue at least twice before publishing a rating, and we'll update scores if things change — for better or worse.

We also run a Head to Head feature where the community votes on which pub pours a better pint. Those rankings are separate from our editorial scores — the people have their say too.
